West Side Story beat this? Should not have happened.
This deserved to win the Best Picture Oscar of 1961.

"Judgment at Nuremberg" is a good movie and I don't want to sound like some fanboy, but I'm glad for every Oscar that "West Side Story" won. It was one of the first films that got me to appreciate and love cinema. Truly showed what movie magic can be.
shareI couldn't agree more this is such a perfect and wonderful film and even though West Side Story is good as well it's such an empty film, it really doesn't have the same impact that Judgment at Nüremberg has, I think it's ridiculous that it only won 2 Oscars while West Side Story won 10, and it's especially illogical that one of those 10 awards was for Best Supporting Actor when it's absolutely clear that Montgomery Clift gave the best performance of the year.

It was apparently not absolutely clear or even just clear that Clift gave the best performance of the year.
I would agree.
shareThis is hard. I think NUREMBERG is a better film, while "W.S.S." has A LOT of flaws. But the latter was an adaptation of an old play that had its own style, which still influences musicals to this day. Meanwhile, the former is a dramatized version of a real-life event, which had already been shown in a TV movie.
In the end, both had different impacts in the history of cinema.

I haven't seen West Side Story as a whole but I have watched excerpts of it on YouTube, enough for me to pass a judgment.
I can't believe it won best Supporting Actress. Rita Moreno was okay--she danced and sang--but when you compare her to the more challenging, serious, dramatic work by Fay Bainter and Judy Garland, she really pales.
Montgomery Clift was very good but his part was so short and I don't think you should get an Oscar for only one scene.
I agree entirely with the OP. The bottom line, most likely, is that "West Side Story" in many respects is easier to take, and that's not a good reason.
