My husband and I watched this again tonight, and I was appalled at some of the reasoning echoed in the debates we're hearing today. Toss the Constitution aside and vote in a "strongman" who'll take care of all the nation's problems.

Not awfully far IMO. When you look at the Reichstag Fire Decree of 1933, which suspended parts of the German Constitution for national security with those of the Republican USA PATRIOT Act of 2002 which severely undercut portions of the US Constitution, you'll see some parallels. The principle is trading liberty for security.
We how have a candidate for President that is following the path of singling out ALL members of a small (< 2 percent of the US population) religious group and vilifying ALL of them for the actions of a very few. Muslims in the US make up a little over 1 percent of the population. Jews in Germany in the 1930's made up less than 1 percent. What is really sad are all of the Americans buying into this platform of hatred. I see beyond A or B so I'm not a Clinton supporter. I support Libertarian Gary Johnson.

The Patriot Act scared me, but most Americans barely took notice. And now, with an arrogant, incompetent sociopath running for office, we are seeing shades of 1933.
I realize several years have passed but, when you call the Patriot Act “Republican,” you lose all credibility for everything else you say. It passed 98-1 in the Senate which was almost equally split between the parties. Thus Democrats voted it into law by a 48-1 vote. It was also repeatedly reauthorized and extended during the Obama Administration including some of the most criticized surveillance portions. Let’s face it, the erosion and destruction of personal liberty in America has been universally across party lines.

shareThe #1 reason for the events in Germany was a *TOTAL* collapse of their economy. No one had anything and life was miserable until an Austrian painter turned up and brought their nation back to a level of some economic normality. That was why he was so popular and why very few protested against the evil his regime did before the war and during it.
The USA is lightyears away from such economic hardship, so the chances of US turning to National Socialism are slim to none.
