Bless her, I know she gave it her all, but Judy Garland was so pitiful
She was completely drugged and her mind was somewhere else during filming and the rest of these years.

shareIf you think about it in those terms, Montgomery Clift was actually in roughly the same if not worse shape than Judy and yet both managed extremely powerful performances that ideally fit their characters. Know what I mean?
shareJudy did a stupendous concert at Carnegie Hall in 1961, so it's unlikely she was in bad shape during filming. One of the reviews quotes her as saying that she was in such a good place in her life, it was difficult for her to play the tormented Irene.
If the Wiki is to be trusted, her health wasn't good but she was working steadily and not using drugs in the late 50's, early 60's.
Please, everyone was great in the movie. If anyone could be knocked it's the great Lancaster for acting like a statue martyr until the fantastic "twist" where we realize: he ain't so sympathetic.
Garland, though, was great.

Judy played an "ordinary woman" facing difficult challenges. I thought she did a good job conveying that.
