The DVD is too washed out...

...it's hot. Freddie Francis' work is all but destroyed (I had to turn my set's contrast down to the absolute minimum for it to look at all right).

How is the Blu-ray?

Perfection. The Criterion one that is.
BFI blu uses an old master.

It truly is one of the most beautiful movies ever.

I wish the Criterion was region free, this is one of my favorite horror/thrillers but the UK BFI blu doesn't do the beautiful cinematography justice, I don't think there is much chance of a UK rerelease with the new master either.

The DVD looks just fine to me but I'm always so engrossed in the story whenever I watch this that I notice little else.

The Criterion Blu-ray looks amazing. It's almost like you're back in time.

As someone else said, the criterion bluray is absolute perfection. One of the most impressive bluray transfers I've seen.
