Criterion Blu-ray is fantastic

Deep and rich in the blacks and shadows especially; this is a film that truly exemplifies the strengths of the format. I've owned the 20th Century Fox DVD for years which was just fine, but seeing Criterion's job on it is just... wow.

It is possibly my favorite ghost film, so the Blu-ray was a must-have for me. It's definitely worth getting.

I agree. The Criterion disc glows. It's gorgeous. Probably the best I've ever seen a black and white film look on BR.

I've had to have seen this film at least 60 times since the early 70s and watching the Criterion Blu-ray is like seeing it for the first time. Paintings and bookshelves, pieces of furniture, shadows and other details, give watching my favorite thriller , new life.

Just because something can't be explained, doesn't mean it becomes yours!

It has to be pointed out that the master was given to them by Fox, Criterion is just the publisher. Credit must be given where credit is due.

While I don't own the Blu-ray Criterion, even the dvd version looks amazing.

Can't stop the signal.

I received it as a Christmas present - it is stunning.

Agreed, it's like you could step through the screen.

reply

Completely agree. The bluray is total perfection.

Although the transfer is an improvement for image sharpness over the bfi release (and also less cropping as well), my feeling is that they went a little too dark with the final product. The bfi version you don't have to struggle to see the image for the most part.
