shareEddie says something like: 'It was all over before it really started for me' in reference to his previous career shooting pool. Seems too harsh since after all he had beaten Fats. I think it means he couldn't play in a big time pool hall after that, just as Bert had threatened.

There are a handful of references in "TCOM" that are direct cues from "The Hustler." One example is Bert's speech to Eddie about character, juxtaposed with Felson telling Vincent he's a character. Vincent misinterpreted that as Eddie saying he had character, to which Eddie says, "i didn't say you had character. You're an incredible flake."
As to the comment below, I won't dignity it with a retort. I would encourage anyone who is a fan of "The Hustler" & Scorsese to see it & make your own judgment.
