Were the two leads possibly gay characters?
It flew right over my head as a child but the film seemed to strongly hint to me after revisiting, that the two leads seem to never indicate any sort of romantic involvement or interest in women whatsoever. I don't think a woman in the film even has a line outside of one reporter interviewing Mr. Dorkin. It's kinda hilarious to view these days when women are more often than not the protagonist in a film and presented as sexless if not outright as a lesbian.
However back in this time, films nearly always had a love interest of some kind. Perhaps the writer or director was trying to sneak something in? Or maybe just nobody thought of it and thought any kind of relationship or female presence would distract attention from the monster and all the destruction?
If I remember right, there's even a scene set in the trailer that the two men share and we see the boy from the island sleeping in the one bed inside.
