Gorgo re-release 3/19/13: more details

My thanks to both steve-968-94466 and jobla for providing on their threads some very useful news and information on the upcoming re-release of Gorgo.

I'll add my two cents by giving a brief overview of some details about the release.

"Gorgo -- Ultimate Collector's Edition" is being released by VCI on March 19, 2013, on both DVD ($14.99 SRP) and, for the first time, Blu-ray ($19.99 SRP). Each disc contains these same extras:

* "Ninth Wonder of the World: The Making of Gorgo", a new documentary by Daniel Griffith
* Various galleries featuring the following:
--Video comic book and comic book covers;
--Lobby cards and posters;
--Photos;
--Gorgo toys and collectibles;
--Pressbook
* Production notes
* Original theatrical trailer
* Restoration video (before and after comparison)
* Star-Cine Cosmos -- French-language "fumetto" (comic book)

The film is of course in anamorphic widescreen, with optional English subtitles and French dubbing.

So far, most sites are offering both discs for pre-order at discounts, with the exception of Amazon, which is not discounting the DVD.

This is the third incarnation of Gorgo from VCI. The first, released about 1998, was surprisingly poor -- a dark print, wrong aspect ratio, dropped dialogue, an inaccurate MGM logo in place of the correct one, poor sound, small cuts and at least one instance of a scene spliced back into the wrong place in the film. (Astoundingly, this terrible version, long OOP, is selling on Amazon Marketplace at a starting price of almost $35 new!) All these problems were corrected for the terrific 2005 "Widescreen Destruction Edition", which has a flawless print and nice extras (and retails for between $5 - $9, depending on the site). If VCI has further improved upon that disc this will indeed be the best Gorgo yet. As a film that has endured a lot of bad releases on home video for decades, it's past due for a full renaissance.
