Uncut 'The Curse Of The Werewolf'

Does anybody know if they will be releasing the uncut version of the film as I think that as of yet it hasn't been released on any format, or any region in its uncut state. I do however remember it being shown one halloween here in the UK many years ago, so it does actually exist.

The version just released in the US on DVD as part of the 8 film Hammer Horror series may be the uncut version. I rented it so I don't have it available to check the run time but it was around 92 minutes plus, and it included one bit of gore that I don't remember seeing before: **spoiler alert** when the werewolf is shot in the bell tower a veritable geyser of blood bursts from his chest for several seconds. The film looked gorgeous - better than I've ever seen it look before - and each one of the werewolf's grunts and growls sounded as if it was right in my ear, but if you are buying this set you should know that it is rumoured to be the most returned in history due to defective dual-sided discs. The disc I received from Netflix was only one-sided with both Brides of Dracula and Curse of the Werewolf on it. The menu advised to flip the disc for 2 other films but of course they aren't there in this "rental only" version.

reply

There is no "rental only" version. You rented a factory defect.

reply

You may not think that there are "rental only" versions of these movies but Netflix has them. I have rented all 8 of the Hammer films in this collection from them on 4 single sided discs. They are even listed and written up as double feature discs on the Netflix website.

"...only George Kennedy can stop them."

reply

I can confirm that Netflix has single-sided versions, as I'm midway through renting & watching the set myself. It is exactly as you describe.

What's new in the uncut version?

reply

I got one of those defective sets. It was mainly Disc 1 (which has Curse of the Werewolf on it) that had the problems - both sides. My replacement copy was OK.

reply

Alright so I have own the double-sided disc 8 pack and am loving going through the films. Any confirmation as to whether this version is the complete and uncut version of curse of the werewolf? It looks pretty hardcore for a 1961 hammer film so I am guessing it is, but does anyone know?

Groovy. Thanks pal!

The uncut version has a few different things. The bell tower stuff. The werewolfs tearful face at the end.The dead goat, more of Ivonne Romaine after the beggar attack.More stabbing of the Marquis.

The oop 'Terror Vision' UK VHS has been cut in at least 3 places including the bell tower shooting. If you're in the UK, you can see a bit more of that scene by watching the 'Monster By Moonlight' documentary on Universal's 'The Wolf Man' DVD.

(SPOILER) I have a VHS version of this movie and it also shows blood spurting from his chest as he's being shot in the bell tower. Are you sure that is the added footage?

Cinema Fan, I got my VHS copy some time in the early 90s, about 91 or 32 I believe.

Correction, Cinema Fan that would be 91 or 92, not 32. (Damn fingers won't go where I tell them to.)

i have this vhs version too.just some of gore scenes are a little
more graphic thats all.

Just finished watching the DVD today and indeed there are several bits of gore that were missing from the TV version (which I have on VHS, recorded off of Cinemax years ago). As others have remarked, the stabbing of the marquis is longer by several shots. The TV version is so badly edited here that it always looked like a jump cut, even when I viewed this as a teenager. In the TV print Yvonne Romain stabs the marquis once and the next shot is of him falling to the floor. On the DVD she stabs him several more times before he falls. Others have mentioned the blood spurting from the werewolf's chest when shot at the climax, the bloody carcass of the mutilated goat, and if I'm not mistaken the shots of the bloody corpses of one (or more) of his victims were excised from TV prints as well. By the way, the TV prints had the opening credits letterboxed (with colored designs above and below where it would normally be black) so as not to cut off the credits on either side.

the only version in the uk is by Warner and was issued in 95 and is the heavily cut uk cinema version, there is no other issue in the uk. i dont know if there is an uncut print available anywhere in the world as hammer are british and a lot of films were butcherd by the censor and the censored prints were sent out to the US.
that being said they did film longer versions and different edits of films with more gore or titties. usually for japan and europe

I remember renting a VHS version, back in the mid-Nineties, where the beggar's daughter grew up to be the mute servant girl who ultimately gives birth to Leon (Oliver Reed's character). Has anyone else ever seen that version?
