What part of the 19th century did it take place in?

I have not seen it in a long time,
so can someone tell me what part of the 19th century dose it
take place in when Leon is grown up?

The costumes looked 18th Century to me.

No part of any actual history -- this is set in Hammer Time!! 

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

It was set set in the 18th century, not the 19th century. It was around the mid 1700s. When the movie starts, the narrator says this takes place "some 200 years ago". The movie was made around 1961.
