Didn't understand a brief scene

There was a brief scene where Cesira (Sophia Loren) and her daughter are staying in some cellar for the night. It's chilly so Cesira gets up, goes to close the shutter, and appears to snap off a piece of icile outside the window and puts it in her mouth. It seemed incongruous with the flow of the story, because all the action seemed to be taking place in the spring or early summer, when icicles would not have been forming. Or did I miss something?

I believe it was a brief scene showing the passage of time.

They were only supposed to stay a month but obviously stayed much longer.

Yes, despite the statement that they were only going to stay a month, it is clear from the point of the scene in the cellar and what occurred in the next several scenes that it was much later, and in the winter.

The last 25 or so minutes of the film occur even later, when summer returns.
