Apparently the folks at Snopes.com created the "Mr. Ed was really a zebra" story (a hoax) in the 1990's on purpose. They did this as an exercise to "encourage skepticism of 'respected' sources," ie. even sources such as snopes.com!
If you read the information on Mr. Ed on the Snopes site, you will see how far-fetched the zebra-as-a-horse idea was. The entry even claims that they didn't need to paint over the stripes since they were using black and white film.
Never mind the fact that there are distinct anatomical differences between a horse and a zebra. See the entry on Mr. Ed which is on wikipedia.com.
