My Mister Ed sighting on the highway in the mid-1960's

My family traveled a lot across the country during the early to mid-60's. It was mostly boring so I spent my time in the back seat counting license plates and car models.

On one trip traveling west on Route 66, we came across a truck and horse trailer. It was a light beige trailer and had "Mister Ed the Talking Horse" nicely painted all over it in various ways. Out the back of the horse trailer was Mister Ed's blond tail hanging out. As we passed by, Mister Ed looked at me. It was such a great thrill as a kid fan of the show. I was around 8-10yrs old and had been watching the show regularly. I will never forget this sighting, it's burned into my brain.

Anyone else see Mister Ed in his trailer on the highways during this era ?

I met Lorne Greene in the early 70's at the Cheyenne Frontier days parade, and Jody Foster about 15 years ago at the Grand Wailea in Maui sunbathing. but never saw Mr. Ed. I would trade meeting Lorne Greene for meeting Mr. Ed any day. props to you!

That would have been a real thrill, but no. I was happy to learn that Mister Ed used to live pretty close to where I live. When I mention that to people, they ask, "Oh, Alan Young?" No, Dummy, the horse. People (well, not I) around here actually have stables or stalls in back of the houses.

Ava Gardner, Ronald Reagan, and Tab Hunter lived nearby, too, but that's not as exciting.

As a 9 yr old in 1965, I "met" Mr. Ed at the Orange County Fair (Los Angeles area). They had him in a shady spot, roped off. I don't know if it was the owner, but he let me pet him, since there was a lull in the action. Now, I've heard there was a second Ed look alike Palomino that was used for these kind of events. Don't know if that's true. But as a kid, I was thrilled. Growing up in the L.A area, there were a lot of celebrity sitings. You got used to it. There were no Paparazzi back then, so celebrities were in the public more.

Hey that must have been very cool ! We're the same age about, it was around the same year too. I wonder if when I saw Mr Ed traveling west on Rt 66 he was headed your way. I have read verified accounts that there were two Mr Eds, one for filming and one for meet and greets. But we will never know for sure, since I think they had a problem with the PR horse, or some such. The real Mr Ed was kept near the filming studio so the chances you met the real one is very likely. Lucky you !
