Why did the Kirkwoods leave?

I always wonder what happened to the Kirkwoods in the last season. Did Leon Ames decide to leave or were they just written out? While I had preferred the Addisons, the Kirkwoods were also funny and interacted well with the Posts. Any ideas?

Budget cuts maybe as the show returned to first run syndication and off network

I believe it totally had to do with the budget.
