Backwards message in theme song

I read somewhere that when the "Mister Ed" theme song is played backwards, you can hear references to "Satan." My sister was once listening to the radio, and a disc jockey was discussing this topic, and played the theme song backwards. My sister claims she did hear the word "Satan" several times.

Has anybody heard the theme song backwards, and if so, did you hear anything?

Sincerely,S.B.

reply

This was a bit that Rush Limbaugh did a number of years ago. He was talking about (and forgive me if the details are a little fuzzy) a minister who claimed that he had found Satanic messages recorded backwards in Rolling Stones songs (or the Grateful Dead or somebody like that). So he (Rush) had his sound engineer record an ominous sounding Satanic message and record it over the Mr. Ed theme played backwards. When people called in to ask how you got records to play backwards, he told them that their stereos needed a piece of equipment called a "disgronificator" to do that. This shows you how far back it goes - they were still talking about records, not CDs.

Tonytshirt...Thank goodness you saw that "Howard Stern" episode. I was beginning to think my sister and I were the only people who heard the media discussing backwards/satanic messages in the "Mr. Ed" theme song back in the late 80's, early 90's.

Joepozz...It sounds like Rush Limbaugh was mocking the possibility of backwards messages in songs and music rather than report this topic to his listeners. Saying that he had his engineers deliberately put a satanic message in the "Mr. Ed" theme song would leave a lot of people to believe that he made up the whole story himself. According to what my sister heard, somebody put the backwards messages in the "Mr. Ed" theme song back in the early 60's when the "Mr. Ed" TV show was brand new. I am no technical expert, but I never heard of a disgronificator before. Does such a device really exist?

I do appreciate both of your feedback though.

Thanks a lot!

Sincerely, S.B.

My first sentence said that it was a "bit" that Rush did. And by that, I meant exactly what you said - he was having fun with the whole thing. He made up the word "disgronificator" as part of the bit. There really is no such thing.

Limbaugh did not make it up. There was talk about this in the early 80's, about 5 years before he came on the air. Allegedly there is a voice that says, "source of the devil" when you play it backwards.

reply

Hmmm. Let's see if we can break that down.

"Source of the devil" ends with an 'L'.

"A horse is a horse,
of course of course.

And no one can talk (<- talk) to a horse,
of course.

Unless (<- unless) of course..."

Degronifying:

Klat nac eno on dna (No 's' or 'd' sounds in there.)

Sselnu esruoc fo esroh a ot klat (still no 'd' sound)

I hope I did that right.

This was also parodied in the 80's punk rock song "L. Ron's Dead" by Bugout Society. The song is about L. Ron Hubbard, founder of Scientology. The words, "Mister Ed is the source of the devil and he's taken L. Ron away from us" are inserted into the song backwards so you can hear it clearly if you have a tape deck that can be reversed. (And a tape deck is what you need to do that, or a digital sound editor, but not a turntable.)

reply

I thought a disgronificator was a device that enabled former soldiers, whom had been wounded in a certain area, to become fathers.

Ok I have heard everything. Mr Ed and satanic messages in the theme song. I do believe that you heard it but I just wanted to know does anybody actual believe it was intentioanlly made that way? Howard Stern is crazy.

reply

[deleted]

LOL I was getting worried for a second. SO Howard Stern was actually mocking some crazy politician who thought heard it. SOunds hilarious. Because some of these folks take this stuff seriously. I remember the Beatles White Album was suppose to have some subliminal messages in it too.
Some famous hard rock group was actually brought to court because some parents thought some song that was popular was giving out satanic subliminal messages and that is why their son killed a person. So I just am happy to hear it was a joke about Mr Ed. Because who knows would of been next.

reply

[deleted]

That's who the group was. THank you. I never did believe the Beatles message was intentional though. I remember when all of this crazinesss started with the Beatles and the White album. I think we can hear all types of things if something is played backwards. I think the Beatles picked up from the unintentional message their fans were hearing and made it into something. And eventually they took credit. But who wouldn't. Personally I do not think Paul had it in him to do something so imaginative.lol Maybe John, but never Paul.

reply

What people heard as 'I buried Paul' was supposedly 'cranberry sauce'.

Anyone who thinks there are satanic messages in Mister Ed is seriously deluded.

reply

LOL.I never heard anything so funny in my life . I am glad to hear that it was a stunt by Howard Stern and people did not believe Mister Ed's theme song was some demonic message. But who knows, some folks just might believe it. If they do, they need to seek help. NOW
I really do believe the Beatles capitlized on the whole White Album foolishness. It actually sold more albums. I don't blame them.

reply

a lot of the Beatles stuff was made up by crazed fans, like the "cranberry sauce" thing. there's a whole conspiracy out there that claims Paul is dead. they found 'clues' everywhere, like the Abbey Road cover. it's actually pretty funny.

other bands have also had 'demonic' message claims made against them, like Led Zepplin apparently has a satanic message recorded backwards in Stairway to Heaven. The Rolling Stones wrote songs that were very vocal about the devil (wasn't there one that praised the devill in the title?) and sex and drugs in there songs and song titles (Jumping Jack Flash, "Let's spend the night together", etc.), so they were an easy target. but with the stones, you never know. i mean, with keith still around one might think.... ;)

reply

I know it is hilarious The heavy metal groups are always accused of having some type of satanic meaning in their music. Rob Zombie who makes a living as a heavy metal artist known for such albums as HellBilly Deluxe, The Sinister Urge , Devil Music and the all so famous Living Dead Girl who has now branched out to horror movies such as The Devil's Rejects and the House of 1,00 Corpses is now hosting a show on TCM. Can one be any more mainstream. lol I get the feeling even he was pulling these seekers of secret satanic messages legs.

My thing is why would they do something like that? If they really wanted to put some message from the devil in their songs they would make sure everyone could figure it out and it would be right there for all to hear.

The Rolling Stones are just a bunch of upper middle class Brits having a good time messing with folks. I met Mick a few times and believe me I doubt that anything he and Keith wrote have any message in it other then the one you hear out right. Keith I still can't believe is still alive. I am not a religious person but the fact that he is still going either means he made a deal with the devil or with God. Take your pick. lol

devil. God wouldn't have let him in that tree.

It's aawesome that you've met Mick Jagger. if you ever see him again, tell him that i don't own any of his cds but his songs have been running through my head for two days straight. right now i'm on Ruby Tuesday, and before that was Paint it Black. and i'm not a desperado fan of theirs either. that's my dad. i like it, but i don't love it.

reply

It's cool you met Jagger- tell him "Let it Bleed" is their magnum opus, and why the heck did he write the theme song to Mr. Ed with backward satanic messages?

"Torgo, you're the laziest man on Mars!"

During the Charles Manson trial, the Los Angeles D.A. attempted to subpoena John Lennon because of the whole "Helter Skelter" graffiti at the crime scene. Lennon told the D.A. to go to hell. He basically said, (not an exact quote) "We write music, and we don't want anything to do with this lunatic, or what he did". I remember, sometime in the 70's, Pat Robertson playing records on his show. He said the Eagles were satanic because of the song, "Good day in Hell". Anyone who's heard the song knows it has nothing to do with satin. And, yes, he played some records backwards. Wholesome artists, like John Denver. It was hilarious. Better then a SNL skit, because he was serious!

marbleann: "I remember the Beatles White Album was suppose to have some subliminal messages in it too."
-------------------------------------------------------

Well, the Beatles White album was what Charles Manson said told him to commit the Tate-LaBianca murders, and he had alot of strange interpretations for the album, mainly the song Revolution 9.

Manson used it to decipher Revelations, Chapter 9, in an astonishing manner, with faces of men and hair of women, with metal shields (the electric guitars), fire from their mouths (their singing).

This was long before Limbaugh or Stern came on the national scene, if anything, the Manson connection is what prompted whatever Stern or Limbaugh may have done in regards to the White album, if either of them did.

If anybody plays the White album backwards, they're just trying to hear what Manson heard.

reply

You know what, this is interesting, but who cares...I mean, if your a christian, do you really go around playing records backwards to hear messages???? Also, what would be the point, from the ol devils angle, I mean what would evil have to gain by doing this??? I never did quite get the idea...
Ive heard this story about other song too.

reply

The paranoid idea would be that it must be some subliminal message to make you listen to the praises of Satan. And no, it isn't an overly Christian idea, nor are Christians doing this.

Like with most stereotyping, if one person plays an album backwards and thinks he hears 'Satan' and he HAPPENS to be a Christian, OH, ALL CHRISTIANS THINK THIS WAY AND DO THIS, which of course, couldn't be further from the truth.

Did you all know that the word "gullible" is not even in the dictionary???

hawhaw, i once fell for something like that. "gullible spelled backwards sounds like potatoe."

sorry i ruined your joke, but its been up for a month now, so...

reply

That's funny and I see that it was posted on Christmas day 6 years ago, yet a lot of people didn't "get it"

I was reminded of the George Carlin routine where he's a DJ for "Wonderful WINO radio" Touting the new hit record "and hey kids, if you play it backwards it screws up your needle"

reply

come on people it's 2007!!!

as far as "HIDDEN" satanic messages goes they are an urban myth created by the religious right. you know they always have to be fighting satan he's everywhere especially in that rock music!!!(note: read the word HIDDEN again. because i slightly contradict myself below)

yes backwards things have been put on albums but they are on purpose, not hidden!!! you can tell they are backwards. and listening to stuf backwards thats not meant to be heard backwards is really annoying trust me on this one

and how do we play stuff backwards?

you cannot play records backwards using your finger. to spin it the opposite way just doesn't do the trick you cannot maintain the correct speed so what would be the point of putting stuff backwards on a record?

the only way you could of played music backwards was on those big reel to reel tape machines. and gee everyone i know has one of those!! you can also acheive this with a cassette tape but its a pain it the ass to crack it open and flip the tape so it plays the opposite side of the tape. i'm not sure what you can do with digital on the computer but my cd player sure as hell doesn't have a "play backwards' button on it.

prince did record some music backwards but you can tell it is backwards and the message is deffinately not satanic. i forget the album its on and he's praising god. a friend of mine was good at flipping the cassette trick and was a big prince fan

iron maiden does have a spoken part before one of their songs but you can tell thats backwards too. i forget what it said exactly but it was not satanic

the judas priest thing.. those kids were drinking and smoking pot when they decided to commit suicide while listening to priests "stained class" album.(only one kid died the other was disfigured badly by a misplaced shotgun blast)
the parents lawyers claim was that the song "beyond the realms of death" contained the subliminal phrase "do it". rob halford maintained that what you hear is his breath during him singing. if i remember correctly he had to demonstrate this in court. i also think the record company had to provide the master tapes to be played in court. any way the trial ended in judas priests favor.
WHY didn't the parents go after who got them the pot and beer. GREED!!??

Around 1972-73 my brother's girlfriend let us use her record player and it had a setting that freed the turntable and allowed the record to be pushed backward. and "...What's a baby" turned into, "ybaby sup? The record player I have now, doesn't have that extra setting.

I think that hidden messages are in songs is an urban myth perpetrated against religious figures. I don't know of any who really bother or 'fess up to the need of this practice.

<<<and how do we play stuff backwards?

I used to have a car casette tape player which something was wrong with because it would automatically play tapes backwards (at the correct speed) after they finished playing forwards. Then back to forwards again. and so on. With every single tape.

So playing rock songs backwards, you could hear any of the kind of hidden backwards messages like you're all talking about.

But do you know what you get when you play a country song backwards?

You gey your house back. You get your dog back. You get your first and second wives back. You get your truck back. You get your mind back. You get your nerves back. You get your hair back. You get your best friend back. You get your dvd, washing maching machine and pond back. You get your tractor back. You get your mower back. .....

go to a tv theme page. find mr ed. play the wav. record the wav on your computer recorder. then play backwards. it says satans the source...

No, it actually says "Satin's the sauce"

Actually its a rap reference it says "sipp'n sum surp" The guy who recorded the song was a black man and an aspiring rapper. He was also a scientist who specialize in backwards enginering of alien tech hence the use of backwards messages in his recordings. He unfortunately died during the second attempt at the Philidelphia Experiment by combined subversive forces of our shadow government and aliens from the Antairs Star Cluster.

About 16 seconds into the Mister Ed theme song, the phrase, "go right to the source" does produce a backwards result of "source of the devil", but the word devil isn't perfectly pronounced. This is easily reproduced by just imitating the sung phrase into a mic and using Windows XP's sound recorder, then reversing it. So certainly it's just a coincidence.

However, trying to reproduce The Beatles "number 9" into the backwards "turn me on dead man" will prove to be a more difficult challenge. The words "neon durman" are the best that can be produced, so perhaps John Lennon did somehow use a special technique to do that.

reply

Very interesting. My sister listened to a disc jockey's program on the radio, and he played the "Mr. Ed" theme backwards. She swears she heard: "Son of Satan." Oh well...maybe it sounded similiar to "Son of Satan", to her ears.

Yes, I agree. John Lennon must have done some experimentation with various recording devices to get: "Number 9" sounding like: "Turn me on dead man", when played backwards. He was a musical genius.

Cheers!

Sincerely, S.B.

The Mr. Ed backwards theme song is obviously going to be its own urban legend, like the suicide on film in the Wizard of Oz.

The Mr. Ed backwards theme was one of the last backwards songs I heard. I guess after this, it lost all of its effectiveness to a naive public.

I heard it on a radio station played backwards and the tune, sounding very much like the theme song singer, said "someone sings this song for Satan."

I remember once another song, heavy metal song and I don't remember who, was played backwards on a talk show and it sounded like the recording in The Fog when Adrienne Barbeau put the piece of driftwood on the recording and the water started pouring out and shorted out the player.

On the talk show, the voice said "the music is irreversable, but your soul is not. Turn back! Turn back!"

richard.fuller1...The song you heard backwards was "Fire on High" by ELO on their album from 1975 entitled: "Face the Music".

My source of information is a book entitled: "Big Secrets" by William Poundstone (published in 1983). It was one of the first books out there to examine the "hidden message in rock music" phenomena.

I never saw "The Fog". Is there a subplot about hidden messages in songs in this film?

Cheers!

reply

Whre did I hear that at then, the ELO song? Wasn't on the radio, it was another backwards song. The Mr. Ed bit I heard on the radio.

I want to say I heard the ELO bit on the old Wil Shriner show, wasnt the tonight show. There werent alot of talk shows around then, and even then I didnt watch them.

It may have been on Wil Shriner but Im not sure what the song was forward.

And 1980s The Fog had a scene where a piece of driftwood from the 100 yr old wreck was in Adrienne Barbeau's possession and she put it on a desk where a recorder was playing radio promos and suddenly the radio began speaking a different message. That's what the ELO bit sounded like to me, that you have now identified as an ELO song.

Not listening to The Fog now. Its Christmas.
