canned goods in the fridge

Does anyone know a good reason why Wilber was storing the canned goods in the fridge in the episode where Carol wanted a new fridge? He was putting all the canned food from the shopping trip in the fridge, along with stuff that actually belonged there. I know they lived in a warm climate, & didn't have a basement to store food, but this was canned stuff from the store, not canning jars needing a fruit cellar. Maybe he was too cheap to get an air conditioner & thought the food would spoil. Did anyone actually store their unopened cans in the fridge in the 60's or was he just being his normally weird self??

I have a can of shoestring beets in the fridge right now. When I open it, I will put the remainder in a storage tub, but because I like cold beet strips on my salad, I always put the next can to be opened in the fridge.

Maybe canning processes weren't as good back then?

Of course, it could be he was distracted and didn't realize. Was he talking to anyone at the time?

I keep canned peaches in my fridge. Tastes better that way.

I would think it's because he lives in a warm climate and so hasn't got a cool pantry to store his cans. There is a danger of the tins rusting if he keeps them in there for any amount of time so he would still need to consume them fairly quickly.
