Please help explain this DVD nonsense...

Okay, it appears the US dvds are out of print and expensive on the second-hand market.

However, I see the complete series is being released on DVD in the UK, starting this summer. Glad I have a multiregion DVD player!

But -- are there any plans to port these releases over to the US?

How about Blu-Ray? Amazon UK has only Series 4 listed for Pre-Order on Blu Ray...but then that doesn't mean the release will actually happen.

Thanks!

I believe A&E hold the distributions rights for both broadcast and DVD in the U.S..

You might try the A&E site periodically or The Original Avengers site.

I don't know if you can still buy them there, but you can sign up for a newsletter that will tell when new DVDs are available or you can email [email protected]

Since A&E has gone to the so-called reality television, they don't televise a lot of the British programming they use to air, but they do sale a lot of the DVDs for "Poirot", "Sherlock Holmes" with Jeremy Brett on their site.

Yes, the series is currently being released in the UK, in five volumes, each containing 8 disks, comprising the entire season, seasons 2 - 6. As they are Region 2, PAL disks, you'll need a multiregion player capable of converting PAL to NTSC. Those machines are very reasonably priced. Feel free to buy from Amazon UK. There is no problem shipping them to the US. Prices are slightly less than shown on the UK website, as DVD's exported will have the British VAT (value added tax) deducted from the advertised price, though the shipping to the US will be somewhat higher than their domestic rates. I've purchased many DVD's from Amazon UK, as well as some third-party sellers in the UK, and never had a problem receiving the merchandise. Some packages are received from Amazon UK, and some from Amazon DE (Germany), but never any problems getting them to the US.

Be sure to read the customer comments on the Avengers series, as some of the initial pressings of disks had problems. The publisher appears to be very responsive to replacing those disks, but it's best to be aware of the problem in the event you get a set of initial release disks, and not a set of the later, reissued volumes.

I have also purchased dvds from the uk, but ive had problems with region free dvd players. Ive had both a Phillips and a Pioneer region free dvd player and although they play the disks, these players show fine horizontal lines through the picture on screen and it can be very annoying, giving jagged edges to objects on screen. The region 2 dvds play fine on my computer but I would really rather watch on my 40 inch flatscreen TV. I dont want to pay high prices for region 2 dvds and then not be satisfied with the picture, can anyone recommend a region free player in the US that will play perfectly?

You may want to try the http://www.ecoustics.com/ site, they're pretty good at doing editorial reviews, but you can also find user reviews and comments on anything that has to do with electronics.

You can also circumvent the region coding of a DVD disc by burning a copy that adds flags for all region codes, creating an all-region DVD. DVD backup software can do this, and can usually remove Macrovision, CSS, and disabled user operations.

Since A&E stop making Region 1 discs of "The Avengers", they had done the same thing with "The Prisoner" and last year they started selling that series on BluRay, since they're also suppose to release "Space: 1999" on BluRay, they may do the same with "The Avengers" for anything after season 3 which would be the start of the Diana Rigg episodes.

The link to A&E is good but they don't have this show.

You have to read all the post in the thread the first post I made was in August, and the next one in October in which I stated A&E had pulled it's region 1 DVD for sale on their site. Companies do this after a title stops selling the quantities that make it viable to support. The problem is the show also doesn't air anywhere to introduce it to new audiences, so the number of people interested in the DVD eventually start to decline which is what happened with this title. Just look at the small number of people currently inquiring about DVD releases for this series now, as opposed to when A&E was airing episodes and at one time there was a site that used to stream episodes on their site, and even they stopped.

I found this site about a month ago when I was looking for a DVD for another series, and it seems to be a pretty good source for television series on DVD.

They don't sell anything, they only provide release dates and where to purchase information for Region 1 only, which covers the U.S. and Canada. If someone is outside region one they would need to purchase a DVD player that can play a Region 1 DVD.

I just started a thread "The British sets have extras . . . " but should have just extended this thread. Oh well. Can't get them, and when we can, they're not as good as overseas.
