I wish that COZI-TV would air the closing credits of "The Avengers." I'd like to see who the other actors were in the episodes.

Unfortunately, COZI pulls the same thing with its airing of the classic "Maverick" western series, failing to show the closing credits.

They're currently showing the Tara King episodes! This is great because I already have the Diana Rigg episodes.
They are airing out of order, and butchered, but at least they're showing them!
I've been recording them daily, and they clock in at 44 minutes minus commercials.
I wonder if they'll show the earlier b&w ones?

reply

I've never seen the Tara King episodes, so this is quite a treat for me. She's no Emma Peel, that's for sure, but she's quite entertaining. It seems like the stories just got goofier as they went along, and what a showcase for Sixties fashions! Or at least what TV producers thought young people were wearing. Even Steed loosened up a bit in the fashion department.

You can see that the show's writers were running out of ideas after Dame Diana Rigg left the show.

And, as much as I liked the new character of "Mother," I think they overdid it with Steed and Tara meeting "Mother" out is some field with all of them in oppulent British automobiles.

They were running out of ideas by the time of Rigg's last season. No less than four episodes from that season were remakes of earlier episodes from Honor Blackman's time on the show:

"Death of a Great Dane" (S2) ---> "The $50,000 Breakfast" (S5)*
"Don't Look Behind You" (S3) ---> "The Joker" (S5)
"The Charmers" (S3) ---> "The Correct Way to Kill" (S5)
"Dressed to Kill" (S3) ---> "The Superlative Seven" (S5)

Its mentioned the writers were running out of ideas, and actually interspersed four "remade" episodes from the Honor Blackman era. They should have "remade" all those old episodes then, as not many people liked them, and then they would have had plenty of material to draw from for the later episodes.

I never did care for the Tara King episodes. Not only did it get weirder, there was no chemistry between Tara and Steed as there had been between Steed and Mrs. Peel.

reply

I liked "Mother", but bringing in the character of "Father" was just weird!

I checked cozi tv's schedule for the upcoming 2 weeks and it looks like they will begin season 2 in b&w on monday, May 12th after they finish running the season 6 episodes (according to their schedule)!!!

I have been watching season two now on cozi tv. the video quality is lousy. Seems like they could have gotten better quality from a home video camera. Hope they get back to Emma soon.

reply

It's likely due to budget constraints. Some of these (I'm not sure all are) of the early black and white ones are on video tape vs. film. This happened on the Twilight Zone a few times and certainly on the early days of Dark Shadows and other early soaps. And they're filmed on sets vs. on location.

reply

Those early episodes from season 2 and 3 could be off-putting to casual viewers. They were originally shot on videotape, but have since been transferred to film and look worse than if they had just been left on tape. The size of the picture looks odd, too - like it was blown up and then cropped to meet the 4x3 format.

I'm surprised to see COZI showing these early shows. The US broadcast syndication package used to only include the filmed episodes from seasons 4-6 (Rigg/Thorson). A&E did show seasons 2 and 3 about 20 years ago.

Interesting looking at Dame Diana Riggs in The Avengers and seeing her today in
Game of Thorns on HBO. Glad she is still acting.

reply

I've seen all of The Avenger episodes over the years. And these early, pre-Dame Diana Rigg and Linda Thorson Avenger episodes are even better than Lunesta or Ambien for putting one to sleep...zzz...zzz.

Me too.

They started re-airing the season 2 episodes this past Friday. Season 2 introduced Honor Blackman's character of Cathy Gayle, although she is not in every episode. The show Friday confirmed what others have said about poor picture quality and low budget, but I still found it interesting. I had never seen any of season 2 before, but i have some from season 3 on VHS and like them, so I am looking forward to watching more from season 2.
