Ep by Ep; Homicide and Old Lace

One of those eps you occasionally get in TV series where they cut up bits of an episode which didn't work for some reason and adding in a wrap around story to link it all together, much like Star Trek famously did with 'The Cage'. It works quite well except for Tara's blonde hair but they have a very inventive way of explaining it. Rhonda 'speaks' of course, we have another 'coloured', breaking the Avengers rule book, Tara is pretty handy with a her Sterling sub-machine gun and someone should really count the number of times Steed kills a villain using someone else's gun. Also love the chinless wonder guarding the art treasures who admittedly does help overpower the villains and kills their leader in the end.

This is a notorious episode. Originally shot as the Great Great Britain Crime under John Bryce. When Brian Clemens returned, he seemed this to be the worst episode and found it unusable as a traditionally formatted Avengers episode. Interestingly, this I believe is Thorson's first episode filmed and was intended to be a 90 minute episode showcasing the new lead. This idea was abandoned upon Clemens return and Forget Me Knot was planned as a true introductory episode. The outfit Tara wears here is the same she wears on the stairs at the end of Forget Me Knot.

The Great Great Britain Crime was supposed to be the return of the Intercrime organization featured in the John Bryce, Cathy Gale episode Intercrime. I certainly would have like to see what that 90 min episode would have been like. Here we get snippets as if we are watching deleted scenes.

As Homicide and Old Lace it is truly terrible! The worst! The framing is dull with mother telling a tale to his aunties. I also found the chopped up plot and narrative incomprehensible and disjointed especially with the addition of old Emma Peel episode footage. The scenes from the John Bryce filmed portions are so un avengers and again dull.

The fact that this made it on the air is a miracle. I wish Clemens had the time to just scrap it and film a whole different original episode instead of trying to get a quick episode together. Also this episode was held back until quite late into the final season. This also didnt help it as Tara was an established character by then and this was so different to the Tara we were used to by then.

Not an episode one picks to watch often maybe just once to initially see it then forget it
