The poor Sailor (spoilers)

Yeah, the kids do seem to pick on that guy especially. I was wondering if maybe there is meant to be a connection between what happens to that guy and his family and the professor.

1. The professor's wife gets unexpectedly pregnant (although, of course, all the women do)
2. The professor asks for a "year" to try and solve the problem (the same amount of time the sailor had been away from the village).
3. The professor eventually kills the kids like the sailor wanted to.
4. And the professor only succeeds by thinking of a wall (like the wall the brother crashed into).

I felt sorry for the guy that had to drive the car against the wall because it was an accident that he almost hit the children (and they were more to blame for the danger than him). Then he gets out of the car and is genuinely concerned for the children and they kill him. Such spoiled children. :)
