I've got half-way through this 'classic' and I just can't go on.
Every time one of the kid's opens it's trap a woman's voice comes fawning out.
Far too distracting.
Anyone know if there's any versions out there I can watch without laughing?
Completely 100% agree with you... I stopped halfway too... it took away from the movie big time... they didn't sound like children.
shareWell I think, people will defend, that it was intended for the kids to seem otherworldly and odd. Plus they were supposed to be hyper-intelligent and the only way they could do that is by giving them adult voices.
However. I know for a fact there are intelligent sounding kids in the real world and that's just a cop out. I'm sure they just used women's voices to get it done cheaper and quicker than having to do several takes with a kid.
A little extra expense then and they'd have sold a couple more DVDs in 2008!

You've got to be kidding! For a start, the only child who speaks is the boy, David. And unless you've got a hearing defect, it's perfectly obvious that he's speaking in his own voice.
Are you talking about the 1995 Carpenter remake by any chance? I haven't seen that one, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if they dubbed female voices in it.

I'm not sure about the other children, but David's voice is absolutely over-dubbed (with the actor's own voice). It's pretty obvious if you go back and watch it again.

shareEither dubbed or not, the voice of the "leader" (David?) was soooo insufferable. Such a pretentious-annoying accent... I couldn't stand it, and unfortunately ruined the experience of watching the movie for me.

I didn't find his voice annoying whatsoever. I noticed that at times the voice didn't match his lip movements and I thought it was just my imagination, but now that I came to this board, I see that it's not. I do believe that if he was dubbed, it was done with his own voice because he sounded exactly the same in The Innocents.

I did not find it annoying at all. It was a very clear and articulate voice.
Maybe if he had thrown in a few "wuzzup!"s it might have it improved it for some watchers/listeners?

They had a sort of hive mind, and I think it was their basic nature to want to stay together and act and dress alike. Plus they were quite arrogant and assumed inferior humans couldn't be a real threat. They did belatedly realize at the end that they would be better off living separately.

David was played by the most popular child actor in England at the time. He also appeared as Miles in "The Innocents" with Deborah Kerr, a humdinger of a ghost story/psychological thriller. The voice is the same. It's his. He was not dubbed by an adult female, but he did overdub his own voice to make it sound more exaggerated.

I just looked at the IMDB cast list for Village of the Damned on May 25, 2022, and there have been some changes made sinc the last time I looked at it.
Both the alien children and the human children are listed together as "Village Child". Cleve Powell of "The Children of the Damned" is listead as "David Zellaby as a Toddler". Denis Gilmore (b. 1949) is listed as "Keith older brother", one of the human children.

Okay, I just read through this thread. Unbelievable to me that these viewers obsess over one child's voice and dismiss the entire film as a result.
The boy's voice was intended to be creepy and it worked, whether it was dubbed or not.
