Hard to watch after Spartacus the series

I had never seen this before, and I recently watched the whole new Spartacus series. Maybe I should have done it the other way around, because after getting used the imagery and pacing of the show, this just felt really slow and "tame" in comparison. I could only watch it for about 1 hour, then I had to stop. Perhaps I will continue one day, but I don't know.

Maybe I am just too spoiled by the spectacular fights and tons of blood in the show :)

The comments within this thread are a revelation of so much more than just a comparison between a true movie classic and a modern day television series derivative.

Just to through a third option into the ring… has anyone else read the novel?

Regarding the film, the Strode-Douglas fight scene blew me out of my seat back in 1960. Still maybe the best hand to hand fight I've ever seen in film.

Timmie, if you don't bring that rocketship back this instant, you'll get the spanking of your life!

I read the novel and found it powerful and realistic. I do object to Fast's apparently ongoing homophobia, which he negatively portrayed in both Spartacus and My Glorious Brothers.

I didn't notice any homophobia.

OP, this is because you're cinematically illiterate.

I feel that all of the negative comments on here about the show are from people who have never watched it. That is seriously the only explanation. No one who has watched the show through would ever think it was just sex and violence and had no depth.

Correct.

I also watched this after watching the Spartacus series. Though the series is extremely exaggerated, I found it much more interesting than this movie. Not saying this was bad, but the fight scenes and the pacing were slow even though I found it well-written. I loved the soundtrack!

Yes, your brain is in tune with all the cheap, violent, crap that's being squeezed out by cheap companies. That's the trouble with viewers today. If they don't see a murder, rape or a pair of boobs in 5 minutes they move elsewhere for their fix. Pathetic.

Raimi/Tapert were big fans of this movie, which is why they jumped at the chance to do the TV series.

Hercules/Xena were full of Spartacus nods. Hell, since Spartacus was in the public domain at the time, several episodes even have clips from the movie incorporated into the stories.

The Spartacus TV series even has homages/nods to this film. It's a classic and the show was born out of love for this movie.

The Spartacus tv show is garbage lmao. It’s so network television-y, with really obvious cheap effects, and is pretty much pure fantasy. Has basically nothing to do with this movie.

A better comparison would be HBO’s “Rome” show.

It actually has a lot to do with this movie. This movie was very influential on Raimi/Tapert. You can see this influence on their earlier projects like Hercules and Xena. They were fans of the film and included tributes to it in the series. Getting to make their version of the story was probably a dream come true.

Spartacus is one of the best television shows ever made.

I don’t really consider Spartacus the tv show related to this film. It’s a fantasy version. I also easily preferred Hercules: The Legendary Journeys as a show. I don’t know what went wrong with Spartacus tv show. It was just bad.

reply

Hercules and Spartacus are both in my top 5 favorite TV series.

The original Spartacus is about human beings fighting for their freedom. The series is about homoerotic, bloodthirsty cartoon characters wallowing in depravity and savagery. I guess it all depends on what appeals to a viewer more.
