Tony Curtis' Brooklyn Accent!

I know there is no way to make all the accents the correct ones but his was too far out there. It was almost comical.

reply

What accent should he have?

reply

They should have cast someone else. Just my 2 cents.

reply

Someone who spoke classical Latin with the accent spoken in Magna Graecia some 2000 years ago, of course.

reply

Roman.

reply

How about any accent other than a new york taxi driver. R u seriously saying its not distracting and funny that any director wouldn't see such a blatant mistake in accent and dialogue? I red da classiks foh my maztas.

reply

Antoninus must have been from Sicily!

reply

Actually, it is stated in the film that Antoninus is, indeed, from Sicily.

reply

And the British accents are accurate?

reply

Good point. I guess to be truly "authentic" the actors should have mostly spoke Latin with English subtitles. Or English with a Latin accent, whatever that might sound like!

And Tony Curtis was born and raised in The Bronx, New York.

reply

Somewhat related (so as to avoid a new thread) is some of the oddly modern vocabulary used. Specifically, the word "picnic" - used several times in one scene. The word, and the activity it identifies, were not created until many centuries after the era of Spartacus.

reply

It isn't just Tony Curtis' accent; his voice is flat and unexpressive. These other fellows like Ustinov and Laughton have melodious trained actors' voices and Curtis just doesn't.

We used to watch Taras Bulba where he plays Yul Brynner's son and laugh.

reply

It wasn't that bad, you should hear Harvey keitel in last temptation of Christ.

"YOUR A JOO KILLING JOOS!"

reply

Keitel and Curtis hailed from the same area of Rome!

It's that man again!!

reply

I really have an issue with Curtis' Bronx accent, too. I mean, if they insisted on having him couldn't they have provided him with voice coach? It's really distracting. He's a "sing-ger of sowngs?"

reply

Terrible actor. Slept through all his roles, brought nothing to any movie he was in. Meh...

reply

Except for Sweet Smell of Success, Some Like It Hot, Boston Strangler, Defiant Ones, The Persuaders, Captain Newman MD, Operation Petticoat, among others, all of which he received great reviews.

reply

"The Vikings" was another great Tony Curtis film, also with Kirk Douglas. Curtis was an excellent actor, entertaining and believable in every role he did.

reply

I agree. Curtis did just fine in this. People are too picky. There is no right accent. The movie was made for an english speaking audience. There are no direct descendants of the Romans to play these roles and the latin of ancient Rome is a dead language so I guess we just have to use our imagination ;)
