Were Alain Delon's lines dubbed?
Did Delon speak Italian? Is that his own voice? Anyone?

Italian speakers usually re-dubbed themselvesI just came from a screening of Rocco e i suoi fratelli introduced by writer-director Caterina d’Amico (daughter of Rocco screenwriter Suso Cecchi d'Amico). She maintained that only a few of the minor actors in the film looped their own Italian dialogue, and that everyone spoke their native language on the set. However, she did make some other statements that I found questionable (e.g., Paxinou and Cardinale were unknown to film audiences at the time), so I don't know whether to trust her claims that the leading Italian cast members did not re-record their dialogue for the soundtrack. Also, Paxinou's lips seemed to match the dialogue on the soundtrack, and therefore seemed like she was speaking Italian on the set (not Greek).

Thanks for the interesting post. perhaps Paxinou did know Italian, at least enough to speak the lines on set. It's so strange to imagine what these Italian productions were like, with several languages being spoken. And I am always amazed at how well the dubbing is done.
I think the pinnacle of this Italian 'international production' dubbing has to be Anthony Quinn's performance in La Strada which came through with immense power even though dubbed. I believe he won awards for it too!

Apparently, Claudia Cardinale's lines were also dubbed in Italian (she grew up in French-speaking Tunisia and had an accent and her voice was thought to be too low). But it is her voice in the French version.
I imagine Ciro was also dubbed, he is French : Max Cartier.
