Turner Classic Movies "In Memoriam 2018": Hitchocckians Gavin, Harris, Latham
Its the end of 2018, and on Turner Classic Movies they are running at breaks an "In Memoriam" for 2018: actors, directors, writers(William Goldman) and other film personnel.
It runs fairly long for a short piece -- longer, I think , than what the Academy will do next year. A LOT of film people died this year.
As usual, I was stunned to learn that some favorite actors of little fame died: Philip Bosco, James Karen, Peter Donat. I knew them all. I liked them all. I didn't know they had died.
I counted three Hitchcockians. One was John Gavin(represented only by two Psycho clips: in the hotel room at the beginning, and sitting on the bed in Cabin....12?) The other was Barbara Harris...but not in a clip from Family Plot. The third was Louise Latham..but not in a clip from Marnie(I had not known that she had died, either.)
There was Nicolas Roeg and Bernardo Bertolucci representing directors. Philip D'Antononi -- the producer of car chase movies Bullitt, The French Connection, and The Seven Ups -- was notable to me: I grew up on those movies.
And it all led up to one Big One at the end: Burt Reynolds. Represented in three clips: Deliverance(paddling a canoe in rapids), some b/w TV clip(young, he looked brutal, but the smile was there) and Hooper -- with moustache, cowboy hat, and chewin' gum , rearing up on a horse like the leader he once was.
A sad...but uplifting...In Memoriam segment.
