Some Terrible Errors I Made in Recent Posts Here(And Fixing Them)

I am very grateful to have moviechat.org and a few other places to take my thoughts after having lost the imdb boards recently.

But I am still "getting the hang" of how to post. And/or I am not editing properly and things come out the wrong way.

I was reading over some of my recent posts to "catch myself up on the dialogue" and saw several things that bugged me.

ONE: in trying to "cut and paste other posts (primarily those of swanstep) I "left behind fragments" of those posts that make no sense where I left them. Evidently I double-printed the post excerpts and didn't delete them properly. "My bad."

TWO: In commenting on Bill Paxton's four notable films as agreed upon by others, my post read "I can't think those are it"; or something like that. I didn't mean that, I can't recall what I did want to say other than I AGREED with the four and here's a few more.

THREE: This one was my mistake of comprehension. swanstep wrote of Charlize Thereon, she is "not going anywhere," and it is only now I realize that's a complimentary phase (ala "still standing," etc.) I think Thereon, despite her beauty and old-style glamour, is in a weird career slump --- good paying roles, but not quite in the right movies(except Mad Max) etc. So I jumped right in erroneously and agreed that Thereon's in trouble, when I don't think that was swanstep's point at all.

I mention all of this because while I can(and will) go into the individual posts and threads to correct these things...too many of them happened at once. I don't want to give off the impression of insulting people(as I probably accidentally did with my Bill Paxton post). As for the "cut and paste" errors, I may leave them be for now because I tried to fix them and ended up dumping my original posts.

As for Charlize Thereon...oops. Well, it seems I just didn't understand what swanstep was saying. That happens "out here" with people I listen to, all the time. No reason I shouldn't be as bumbling on a board!

Apologies all around...and a hope that when I make future such errors, they will be understood as such.

No problems ecarle. On Theron: yes, I did mean to say that she was 'still standing' (and looking ridiculously youthful and vigorous) rather than that she was in any sort of slump.... but I agree with you that she does seem to have had trouble finding the right roles since her Oscar breakthrough role in Monster (2003). Realistically, almost everything she's done since then has been forgettable *until* Mad Max Fury Road (which was both a box-office and critical smash). That's not a good enough strike rate.

Part of Theron's problem is presumably that her statuesque perfection reads as a little imtimidating on-screen. She's more believable as an action hero or villain than many guys (and that's where she seems to be going these days), but outside of action that sense that she can *really* take care of herself probably rules her out of a lot of classic women's roles, and has probably always made her a poor fit for rom coms. I think that a lot of top models who want to transitions into movies run into a version of this problem: all the things that gave them them their modeling career - their height, ultra-extreme body-type and impassive, glowery face - make them too anomalous to be castable in realistic settings. All the models and post-models therefore end up competing for those few roles in James Bond and science fiction and Giallo/De Palma/beauty-industry-thriller settings.

"What we have here...is a failure...to communicate." (But only on MY side.)

No it isn't. And its the old story in Hollywood: some other beautiful girl comes along. Margot Robbie right now. With "J-Law" in perhaps a different, younger category...and with an Oscar.

That said, as was proved ON the Oscar show, Thereon still has all the look of Film Goddess. And she works -- Fast and Furious movies are HUGE hits worldwide(Kurt Russell is in them, now, too. Yay.)

Yes, she did one commix heroine -- Aeron Flux -- or something -- right after Monster and this kind of role suits here.

All agreed. Its the same for male models, really . People can't really buy their looks in "regular people" roles and I think there is an innate resentment AGAINST their beauty. On a less "Goddess"-like level, January Jones had troubling establishing sympathy for her character on Mad Men and isn't working much anymore, I don't think.

But there are other benefits. Like being beautiful....

Theron's latest action-fest is directed by the half of the John Wick team that *didn't* come back for JW2. Here's the trailer:

There's something irreverent about that "Academy Award (R) Winner CHARLIZE THERON" credit. Mentioning her Oscar win in a film unlikely to win an Oscar.

I'm surprised so many people have found out about this site, everyone I recognize seems to be signed up here. Weird.

Its almost like nothing changed, isn't it?

I was a huge lurker in the discussion forums on IMdB. Read ecarle, swanstep, many others for years. But I did sometimes participate in discussions. Mostly when someone asked a question about a film I knew the answer to.

I also got involved in a few arguments, which I regretted (because in my 'real' life, I hate arguments). But I let them stand because I felt, 'Well...I DID say that.'
