mother
the mother is unyielding hard on her daughter. she never cuts her a break, taking every opportunity to put her down. day's character seems incredibly well-adjusted in spite of it.

shareAren't most mothers like that??
shareShe is a pip.
But I can't help imagining Spring Byington calling friends and family and saying "After all those sweet, sweet roles, I finally get to play a meddling b1tch!"
I didn't think she was a b!tch till the very last scene she did. Giving her daughter her unvarnished opinion was normally done whilst doing her daughter's dishes or looking after her daughter's kids. Actions speak louder than words and the words weren't really mean as much as they were straightforward, which to me displayed a wonderful lack of pretense in their relationship, which is the hallmark of any good, real relationship.
At least there will be plenty implied.
