A question about Lee(Vaughn)

I was just rewatching it and it looked like he was hiding behind the wall during the first skirmish. Was he a coward in the first fight?

I dont believe that he was a coward as such. As a gunfighter on the move, he lived sleeping with one eye open and time had taken its toll, and he was losing his nerve. The relief on his face when he finally proves himself is there for all to see.

Lee had a very interesting story arch. And Robert Vaughn was hands down one of the most talented actors in the film (though to be fair, you could argue that more was asked of him than Coburn, Bronson, Dexter, and McQueen ).

I think Lee was suffering from PTSD.
