I was quite impressed with the quality of the color in this film, if I didn't know better I would have guessed that it was Technicolor.

I guess maybe it was only in the 40s and 50s that the other color systems were inferior to Technicolor?

I think it's actually some of the worst color I've seen in a film

It was some of the best color I've ever seen in a film. In high definition, it's spectacular.
