That was hard to believe, just because of a different hat they didn't recognize him ?? And I thought that scene was totally unnecessary anyway, seemed like it was just pasted in for some reason.

Yes, that was pretty silly - that nobody in the entire gang could recognize him as not being one of them, even if they might not have remembered him as being one of the opposition. Not believable.
