This is a movie for everyone
You don't have to be a communist to appreciate Sergei Eisenstein or believe in Yaweh to enjoy The Ten Commandments and this is a wonderful movie, packed with great lines and good performances and I think that wether you're
an atheist or a creationist you should watch it.
I've always thought that this movie tries to be nice to christians anyway, I can't quote the movie word for word but I think that Henry Drummond/Spencer Tracy says, "A giant once lived in that body but he looked for god too high up and too far away" when talking about the dead Matthew Harrison Brady/Fredric Marsh, this movie is far from hostile towards christians.
The movie is also a bit like watching Wimbledon with Henry Drummond as John
McEnroe, especially the brilliant argument about the first day mentioned in Genesis being of indeterminite length, "It could have been 30 hours, could've been a week, could've been a month, could've been a year, could've been a hundred years, or it could've been 10 million years!!".
I love this movie mainly because of the witty dialogue and Spencer Tracy's
charismatic performance and not because of my views about religion. It's as much about the defence of civil liberties as it is about Darwin anyway and
the same laws that protect the rights of Atheists also protect the rights of Christians.
I think that there are parallels between the trial of Bertram T Cates and
the trial of Jesus Of Nazareth aswell, it's still a person being punished
for speaking freely.
