A Great Movie, still relevant

Wow, what a cinematic tour de force this is. Virtually perfect are the writing, dialog, acting, photography, casting and direction. Cant believe this was beat beaten out for the Best Picture Oscar by The Apartment, oh wait yes I can...stupid academy voters they probably never watched this.

This was the perfect vehicle for the aging stars Spencer Tracy and Fredrick March. The interactions between them are superb, both in the courtroom and out. Plus with the recent rise of Creationism and Intelligent Design, the film is even more appropriate than it might have been in 1960.

I never thought I'd live to see the day when such a mind numbing concept like "Intelligent Design" would seemingly make strides to eliminate such a well documented theory as evolution. I guess Spencer Tracy's character was right when he said, "...fanatacism and ignorance is forever busy and needs feeding. And soon your honor, with banners flying and drums beating we'll be marching backward...backward!..through the glorious ages of that 16th century when bigots burned the man who dared bring enlightenment and intelligence to the human mind."

I've heard some States are making strides towards de-criminalizing evolution.

What really serves as a testament to the greatness of this movie is the inordinate number of posts it has. One could easily spend the better part of a day reading them all! Only a movie that touches our basic emotions can generate so much reaction from both the faith-based and the faithless. I am a Christian who finds no essentially contradiction between certain apsects of evolution and the Creation. Even Darrow points out to Hornbeck the importance of both Darwin and the Bible. And, Darrow (Drummond) carries them off together at the end.

Poster gerald-flynn makes an excellent point! I attended a Christian Brothers High School and when we took Speech class, our class had to act out many scenes because of their power and literacy. But we also discussed the dychotomy between evolution and creation and were able to find common ground.

Well said. Truth and beauty are all around us and it doesn't take much effort to find them once your mind is opened.

Too bad it had nothing to do with the reality of the trial.

They got the trial right. The stuff that led up to the trial -- THAT they fudged egregiously.
