Perhaps it is "catchy."..However it also brings with it too much religious baggage. Plus the people singing it in the movie weren't exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

The townspeople were portrayed according to the writers' decisions to MAKE them look like "not the sharpest knives in the drawer". It's the typical Hollyweird bias to usually present almost any group of Christians in an unflattering light.
