I didn't really get it either. I think I kind of do, but it's been a while since I've seen the movie so I can't quite remember how the whole ordeal went.

She said things to Brady and his wife about her relationship with Cates that she thought she was saying in "confidence." But Brady called her as a witness for the prosecution and began grilling her on the very same issues she'd related to him off the stand.
