An acting clinic

It's amazing watching these two ply their trade. I just noticed the other day how much compassion March puts into a character who is essentially a villain.

Agree, you limited it to Tracy and March. But Harry Morgan is just a terrible actor, although impressively consistent--he's been terrible in absolutely everything he's ever been in.

I think everybody, and I mean everybody in the film did a great job. I just never understood the gushing over Gene Kelley's performance. Maybe it's because he was playing against type and didn't start dancing.

reply

Yes, that's exactly it. I think he was good, though. Nothing great.

One of my favorites..and I agree,March and Tracey put on a master class.I mention in another thread, one has to be fully familiar with both actors careers.Going back all the way to each's portrayal of Jekel and Hyde-to fully appreciate their court room battle.

I'm an agnostic, but this is the mistake people make when judging the character played by March.

My problem with March is that he plays the character as a pathetic buffoon. The character is based on William Jennings Bryan, who was a magnificent, charismatic orator who's voice could fill a tent without a mike and could hold the attention of listeners for hours. Bryan was a major star in American politics for decades.
