Roger Corman was known for the cheap sets that's for sure.

It is possible they used a matte painting for the house.

Very possible. For Corman, this was a fairly big budget picture. The effects really aren't all that bad for a 1960s movie. Sets, costumes, and cinematography look pretty good.
