Harryhausen Movies: Sense Of Wonder, Fun Vibe

These movies were highly entertaining during their era and can be for later generations,IMHO. Optimism over cynicical sophistication.

His movies are among the best fantasy/sci-fi films of all time, and I cannot imagine those genres without his amazing contributions.

Ray's phone must have been ringing off the hook, to use a 20th Century phrase.

One of the biggest regrets of my moviegoing years was not seeing Harryhausen at the AFI(DC) some thirty years ago. However, I did see ? Ellenshaw who did the mattes for numerous Disney films, Chuck Jones and a special showing of Snow White with some of the remaining Disney animators when I lived in Foggy Bottom.

Your comment is interesting because I was watching this film on dvd tonight I lamented missing all of these movies as a kid in the 1970's. I believe they still played at kiddie matinees in that era, well over a decade after they were made but there was no such kid-oriented matinees in my neck of the woods back then and I suspect these films being made by major studios like Columbia were much more pricey for local tv channels to book on their Sunday morning/afternoon movie slots for kid films so they just showed low-budget schlock on tv in my area instead of these movies.

Much I one praises Ray Harryhausen one has to acknowledge too though that Kerwin Mathews is the absolute perfect hero for these films (including the faux-Harryhausen JACK THE GIANT KILLER), he really is a storybook hero come to life.
