A properly conflicted character

A man torn between the motives his situation taught him and his own true desires. Here's a guy who's upbringing filled him with resentments, convinced him that the thing to do is to show up his uncaring father by proving himself the better man. He strives to reach the top, the view from the terrace looking so nice as it does. And he thinks this makes him independent of his father. He thinks he wants this success for himself, but really it's desire that originates in the need to escape his circumstance in a family devoid of loving relationships.

When he meets Natalie he discovers desires that are truly his own - to be happy and to be among a loving family. The rest of the story is the drama generated by these conflicting motives - his 'nature', bred into him since birth - vs his will - the desire for a woman of his choosing and a situation that affords happiness.

You don't see characters like this in movies anymore. Today a character is considered 'complex' if he has ONE motivation.
