What a scene! It's amazing what dangerous things stunt men used to go through. I wonder how long the preparation/planning took... Unless they just did it. Something common in older movies that I hate to see -- and I believe is present here -- is people falling along with their horse! How easily can't such a thing go terribly wrong? A slight miscalculation and you got a goddang horse on your face...

Also, the guy getting run over was a pretty shocking sight even today. I'm surprised ye audience of olde paid to see this kind of thing.

It was rather unexpectedly visceral wasn't it. with the former newspaper editor, who really did look too old and frail to be participating in that sort of race, suffering a rather gruesome, but spectacular demise.

It's clear to see what film might have influenced Ron Howard in the making of Far and Away.

It's clear that the older newspaper guy getting run over was a dummy, you could see it pop up when crushed.  The only ding in a really great scene, so well done + filmed + edited, plus some terrific music from the great Franz Waxman.

I went through it at 1/4 speed in high definition. Pretty impressive, I thought!
