Contradiction

In the first film. Peter Cushing tells Michael Gough, that contrary to popular belief a vampire can not turn into a bat or wolf. Yet in this film, the vampires can turn into bats. In first film this may have been due to budgetary limits, or perhaps at first Hammer was a little uneasy with this, perhaps thinking audiences who at the time would find the idea to far fetched. Then later decided audience wanted to see a vampire who turned into a bat.

I noticed that as well. I kind of like the idea of a vampire turning into a bat, though. It would make it much harder to catch the vampire if it could shapeshift into something commonly seen in nature.

I love vampires having the supernatural element as well, such as changing into bats, wolves and mist. It's my one real gripe with the original Hammer Dracula, as much as I like it, that they decided to do away with this sort of classic vampire mythology. But it WAS done ultimately for budgetary reasons, as anyone whose familiar with the behind-the-scenes happenings at Hammer can no doubt attest to.

According the the Wikipedia article on Vampires in the section on vampire bats, it is stated that vampires turning into bats has no basis in folklore, but was a hollywood creation. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vampire#Vampire_bats
