Why did he let her go back to sleep? (SPOILERS)

After Fran ODs, the doctor tells him she can't sleep for a few hours, but in the next scene or a couple after that, he's letting her sleep in his bed. What's up with that? Did time just elapse in the film?

They march Fran up and down the apartment for hours to keep her awake. ("Tramp tramp tramp" is how the landlady describes it.) It is only after she has been up for several hours that the doctor allows her to sleep.
