Another OVERRATED film
What a surprise! Another terrible film in the top 100 of the imdb list.
shareWhat a surprise! Another terrible film in the top 100 of the imdb list.
shareAnother thread calling a beloved classic "overrated" without any explanation or details of why you didn't enjoy it. What a surprise!
Of course this movie could never rise to the level of The Coneheads, which you called an "awesome film!", but if you're going to start a thread complaining about it, why not elaborate on the reasons for your disdain?
Why even post?
Only giving the trolls what they want.
Hello maniuis -
I've been reading your posts on your message board and found them most entertaining. Here's a list of other films which you will enjoy calling "boring, overrated" and "terrible" so feel free to do so...
Citizen Kane, Lawrence of Arabia, Annie Hall, Casablanca, The Grapes of Wrath, Rules of the Game, Pulp Fiction, The Seven Samurai, 8 1/2, The Seventh Seal, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Grand Illusion, Sunset Boulevard, The Third Man, The Searchers, Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Schindler's List and Fargo.
Cheers, my friend
I have to be honest and say I liked it less than I was hoping I would. It's a good movie but I wouldn't quite rate it as high as it is rated on IMDB. Just shouting overrated without explanation is stupid though.
shareNo question the OP is a troll. Anytime someone hates a classic movie without even beginning to argue the reasons why is simply trying to stir up the fans of said movie. Ignore him and hopefully he will go away.
shareThis movie is just wonderful and never ceases to put a smile on my face; one of the few movies out there worthy of a 10/10.

no love for shirley here? c'mon she was at her most adorable, girl can't help falling for the wrong man sometimes, she came out alright in the end, relationship-wise,
shareOP you're entitled to your opinion, but for interest's sake, how about backing it up with some sort of reasoning.
"Shut up and deal."
The Original poster never returned. What a surprise!
Anyway, this is a favorite with the seniors in my movie group, and I'll be showing it again within the next three weeks.

I guess I set the bar too high for the OP.
OK eightyyearold guy, you've sparked my curiosity. I hope I'm not setting the bar too high for you.
What would you say are the 10 most popular movies in your seniors' movie group?
But I give fair warning that if The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is one of the responses, I just may have some doubts of the veracity of the post.
Well, I can assure you that while I get a bit liberal sometimes in the movies I show, THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE, isn't among them.
The following list is a bit off the top of my head right now and may be revised after more thought.
1. GONE WITH THE WIND
2. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT
3. AFTER THE THIN MAN
4. THE SOURCE CODE (the reaction to his truly surprised me)
5. THE SEARCHERS
6. MUD
7. SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (Another surprisingly good reaction)
8. THE STORY OF PI
9. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
10. SEABISCUIT
I have deliberately made sure to put several recent novies which went over very well.

What a fascinating grouping of films!
1. GONE WITH THE WIND ...of course
2. IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT...Yes
3. AFTER THE THIN MAN...Is this the favourite of the series?
4. THE SOURCE CODE (the reaction to this truly surprised me)...Whew! I love it!
5. THE SEARCHERS...there'd have to be some western enthusiasts
6. MUD...very contemporary - a big surprise (to me)
7. SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN (Another surprisingly good reaction)...Would never have guessed they liked that
8. THE STORY OF PI...I'm sure some had read the book
9. SINGIN' IN THE RAIN...either this or The Sound of Music I would have thought.
10. SEABISCUIT...may be some remember the horse (being serious here!)
Thank you so much for sharing eightyyearoldguy. May you continue to share a variety of cinematic experiences with your film loving buds for many a day.
Rock on!
I thought that you mostly just showed them contemporary movies...
Say, what did they think of "The Kennel Murder Case" and that one Mr. Moto movie?
~~
Jim Hutton: talented gorgeous hot hunk; adorable as ElleryQueen; SEXIEST ACTOR EVER
Basically, I show recent movies Friday nights, older movies Saturday nights, and really old ones Sunday nights. THE KENNEL MURDER CASE was liked, but the Mr. Moto one didn't go over as well.

Fair enough.

So far, watching 1h35 of it, i have to agree.
But, with all its flaws, this movie could be a document of early sixtieth's "Weltanschaung", culture, Zeitgeist, etc.
I know that the "overrated" thread is practically required for any film that won the Best Picture Oscar or is considered a classic...
...but this one really was highly regarded in its time.
It has been noted here and elsewhere that in 1959 and 1960, three directors -- Alfred Hitchcock, Otto Preminger, and Billy Wilder -- took it upon themselves to "push the envelope" of the Hays Code and movies with more adult themes, sex and (sometimes) violence:
North by Northwest
Some Like It Hot
Anatomy of a Murder
Psycho
The Apartment
Of that group, The Apartment won Best Picture because in 1959(the year of NBNW, Some Like It Hot, Anatomy) the mega-epic Ben-Hur cleaned the table, but in 1960, the compeition for Best Picture was much less rough(especially with Psycho, the giant hit of 1960, not even nominated.)
But what put The Apartment over the top for Billy Wilder were these elements:
The overt sexuality and adultery("This is a movie about f-ing," said Wilder to someone)
The harsh look at the crushing anonymity of corporate life in American (whether in skyscrapers or lower to the ground) as felt by so many Americans(all those desks!)
The careful mix of broad comedy(the "Grand Hotel" TV sequence) with painful drama(Fran's suicide attempt.)
The brilliantly worked-out screenplay, which kept Lemmon's character in agony til pretty much the last minute of the film, as he found out about MacLaine's affair with MacMurray and tried to save her for the awful MacMurray -- all the while both climbing the career ladder and suffering from a mistaken identity as " heartless ladies man".
Social commentary, verboten sex, comedy, tears..The Apartment had it all and captured 1960 (as did Psycho) in a time capsule forever more.
Key: this "light New York romantic comedy" in stark black and white. This ain't Rock and Doris. But the black and white is Panavision, giving the movie an epic feeling.
How very interesting, ecarle! Thanks for that.
I totally agree this film has it all, and captured 1960 so good.
It is a Gem.
