I think they get married, stay married, and live happily ever after.
A few reasons:
That great, great, GREAT long take on MacLaine at New Year's with Sheldrake, as you watch her think long and hard about C.C. Baxter..you can tell she is reviewing everything he has done for her...including rescuing her from suicide, nursing her back to health, offering her back TO Sheldrake, quitting his JOB...this man has made sacrifices for her that Sheldrake(and many other men) would never make.
And she falls in love for good. Hence the long run to the apartment. If she acts cool at the end("Shut up and deal") well...that's the kind of girl she is. She was with Sheldrake, too -- even though we saw how much she really DID love him.
Its the early sixties, and the economy will be good enough for a few years that CC can find work as an accountant and Fran doing something.
And: they've come through the grim adventure of their lives. She tried to kill herself. He prostituted his career by giving out his apartment. Its a secret between them and they emerge from this test of integrity prepared to move forward together.
In love.
