Lady with the clicker thing..

The lady who stands in front of the Elevator and waves at people and makes a clicking sound....

What is she doing?

What job is that?

reply

This is my guess:
She's the supervisor of the elevator operators. She's clicking to tell employees which elevators are available (open and going up) AND/OR tells the operators when they may close the doors because no one else is coming.

reply

She was counting the people as they entered the elevator car. Once a car reached capacity, she signaled the operator to close the doors.

reply

She is a starter, she directs people to the elevators, and when they are full, she clicks to the operator to send them up. Her job is to make sure the lifts don't get too full or congested. The building has 16 elevators, 8 of them are local elevators (for the bottom half of the building) and the other elevators are express (serving the upper floors). Fran works the express elevator.

From the script:
The lobby is an imposing, marbled affair, as befits a
company which last year wrote 9.3 billion dollars worth of
insurance. There are sixteen elevators, eight of them
marked LOCAL - FLOORS 1-18, and opposite them eight marked
EXPRESS - FLOORS 18-37. The starter, a uniformed Valkyrie
wielding a clicker, is directing the flow of traffic into
the various elevators.

reply

Elevator starters (and operators) were common in most large commercial buildings at least until the 1970's.

Just one of many jobs that no longer exist.

reply

I presume you didn't need a degree for being an elevator operator.

If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

reply

Don't knock it! Beats working at McDonalds like you millennials have to do.

reply

That's what happens when you start demanding $15/hr for a menial job.

reply

I once worked at a place that had a woman come around and clean and sanitise the telephones. And that's all she did. When she reached the last phone she went back to the first and started again.

Some of those vanished jobs were real cushy, even if they probably didn't pay much.

reply

And I think it was the promotion offered to Fran, wasn't it?

reply

Day job: she's a starter. After hours, she's a lesbian dominatrix

reply

LOL. She was a dominatrix type for sure. And even though she only had one line she managed to overact.

reply

LOL, I always find it amusing the way she says "No!" when asked if Miss Kubelik showed up for work that day...haha, so funny how people think she's a lesbian dominatrix :)

reply

Not quite. Baxter brags about how close he is with Sheldrake, and that he even can fix a promotion for her. She doesn't really get the offer.

Rome. By all means, Rome.

reply

Wow! thanks for the very thorough explanation. There is a scene in 'North by Northwest' that features elevators with a starter and his clicker.
