Holy Moly - Spoiler Alert
I saw this movie a while ago and I didn't have very good things to say about it. I noticed it's been on a few times since then and again today. I had considered watching it; thinking I might have been to harsh before but then I decided against it. There are too many other movies waiting on my DVR that I might actually enjoy.
Anyway, I watched another movie. When it ended, my TV was on TCM, as it usually is, so I happen to catch the scene where the brother-in-law shows up. He called MacLaine's character 'a lady' several times then punched out Lemmon's character; presumably to defend her honor.
Wow, what a lady, I thought. I've seen this movie, I think the word he needed starts with 'wh' and rhymes with door. Anyway, in the very next scene Lemmon's character is working up the nerve to tell MacMurray's character that he wants to 'take her off his hands' and marry the girl; MacMurray's mistress.
Bing, I suddenly discovered yet another reason to hate this movie. Oh how evil; how sinister! This movie is an attempt to reach the young women of the time especially those who, in regards to sex, were on the fence or firmly planted on the side of being 'old fashioned'.
Times were changing but some girls weren't changing quickly. Unlike the many movies of the past in which young women, who lost their virtue and slept around, could ruin their lives and seriously limit any chance they had of marrying a decent guy; this movie was saying, hey, go ahead and do it. It'll be great; you'll get gifts and be looked after. Any problems you have will stem from your own hang ups and twisted way of thinking. Be patient it'll all work out in the end.
Lemmon's character, while I think he's just as much a pig as the rest, is supposed to represent the decent guy. And, what do you know, even though he knows all about the girl, he still loves and wants to marry her. How romantic; NOT! Let's all forget that she's an emotionally wreck, an unstable tramp, and dumb as rocks and root for this 'happy' couple to come together and make it. What utter nonsense!
This was Liberal social propaganda if ever I've seen it; pure and simple! It was aimed at the young women but if they were going to convince the girls it's okay to drop their panties, maybe they'd better also try to get the rest of society to play along with it too. What better way to do it than to make people laugh; that way they won't even think about or realize what's really going on. They won't notice what they're really being fed.
Now here we are, more than fifty years later and boy were they ever successful. Women of today not only sleep around but they do it publicly but somehow still, if they later have regrets, it was all the guys fault. It was rape. I'm not saying rape is a crime of the past. It certainly does happen today but does it happen as often as we keep hearing?
With so many women so willing and so eager, why would rape, especially date rape, be on the rise and particularly on college campuses where girls tend to be so free? Did women really come out ahead after the sexual revolution? I think not! In fact, I think everyone took several steps backwards. In part it's thanks to movies like these.
Woman, man! That's the way it should be Tarzan. [Tarzan and his mate]
