Yes I would consider The Alamo a Western. My reason may not be the same as a dictionary, but I would consider any film an "Old West" Western if it took place in frontier country, time frame 1800-1900, whether it be the U.S., Canada or Australia. Horses & guns should be involved, but they don't have to be. And a good percentage of the film should be outdoors.
shareAlong with BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, It's one of the few movies in the sub-genre "Gay Western." I base this on the clear homoerotic subtext between Crockett and the Parson, and Bowie and Jethro. I'm also suspicious of Travis and Dickinson, with their constant oldmarried-couple bickering.
