Frankie Avalon's Sweetheart

This was posted in error to the general board.

I am certain that when I first saw "The Alamo" in it's theatrical release, there was a scene in it where Frankie Avalon serenades a young blond Alamo resident. I believe Avalon even sang her "The Greenleaves of Summer". However, I have several versions of The Alamo and none of them have that scene in it. I believe it has some meaning since later in the movie, when Smitty returns from a night raid slightly wounded, the blond girl comes running to him and says "Oh Smitty, you're hurt". It's the first time you see her in the current versions and you are left to wonder where she came from. Am I correct in my statement that she had a larger part in the original theatrical release?

There is an extended version of this movie that's not available on DVD. I'm not sure, but I don't think it's available on VHS either. They have only released the edited down version.

That is a good question Whiterim. Somehow I missed it in 2004. I wish I could answer it. Some of the cast including Frankie Avalon are still alive and I just wish we could contact them and ask them about scenes that were not included in even the director's cut. It would be great to have them and have them included with the director's uncut version.

POSSIBLE SPOILERS (This is mainly for Whiterim)

Whiterim it took a while for my old memory to remember but the events you are describing seem to have occurred in a movie released earlier that year (1960) before The Alamo. It was called Guns of the Timberland with Alan Ladd, Jeanne Crain, Gilbert Roland, Frankie Avalon and Alana Ladd (Alan's daughter). It has been many years since I have seen this movie but I think he did sing to Alana who was his love interest. Avalon's name in this movie is Bert Harvey while Alana's name is Jane. In this movie Avalon and Alana have a lover's fight and he sings a song regreting it afterward. Alana was a blond and in this movie Avalon is later beaten up by Gilbert Roland. When the wounded Avalon is returned to Crain's ranch for medical treatment Alana runs up to him like the scene you described. That gets them back together. I think this is the movie you might be thinking of. It is shown once in a while on tv especially the Encore Western Channel. I could be wrong in my connection with this movie and what you are describing but they are similar.

Whiterim your question was even better than I originally thought. His girls face was shown at dark in the scene you mentioned so I couldn't get a good luck at her. I think the only other scene (at least in the cut version) she might be in is when the women and children leave and she may have been in one of the wagons. By then Smitty had been sent with the message to General Houston.

This is Frankie Avalon's version of the Green Leaves of Summer. It is possible that the scene was left off of the director's cut and as Whitrim has pointed out it would probably have been in the first part of the movie. Too bad it wasn't included. In case link doesn't work below just go to youtube and in search type in Frankie Avalon Green Leaves of Summer.

I just saw a 2 hour and 42 minute version on DVD. It does not have that song in it. It DOES have an establishing scene where when Smitty first enters the Alamo he and the girl catch each other's eyes and goofily grin at each other, obviously a mutual attraction. So later when she is concerned about him we can assume that the two got together for some introductions and conversation between his arrival and his wounding.
