I have heard that Lawrence Harvey

really endeared himself to the Texas people where this movie was made and inner reacted them and seemed to have really enjoyed himself making this movie. Not that none of the other cast members didn't but I have heard he really went above and beyound the call of duty.

I had heard the same thing. The Alamo is one of my favorite movies and I think Laurence Harvey did a terrific job playing the part of one of the South's greatest heroes, Col. Travis too. It's a shame he died of cancer back in the early '70s...before his time since he was only in his mid '40s.

The documentary on my ALAMO DVD shows Harvey reciting Shakespeare with a Texas accent to the delight of the people around him. Other candid footage shows him to be quite a good-natured cut-up.

John Wayne got a real kick out of Harvey, who he got along with very well. There was tension between Wayne and Richard Widmark dating back from a late Forties party soon after the release of KISS OF DEATH where a slightly drunk Wayne saw Widmark and said "there's that laughing @$$hole"...which Widmark never forgave (the notorious "The name is RICHARD" story is a myth; Widmark pointed out that his friends called him Dick all the time). Not helping things was Wayne's not always tactful way of handling actors and Widmark's notorious reputation for arguing with directors. Harvey, on the other hand, joked around an awful lot on the set and earned Wayne's respect for professionalism when a cannon recoiled on Harvey's foot. Harvey carried on as if he was okay, then once the take was over, ordered a pail of hot water and a pail of cold water to soak his injured foot in.

Yes, he was very convincing in the role.
