Charlton Heston as Jim Bowie.

No disrespect intended towards Richard Widmark, but my gosh, John Wayne and Charlton Heston on the same screen would have been epic. What do you think? I read online that Heston didn't want to be directed by Wayne. I wonder why. I guess two alpha males working together can sometimes lead only to legit drama.

In an interview in later years,Heston said he regretted his decisin not to take the role of Bowie.

Seems there was a bit of this type of malicious gossip floating around at the time denigrating Wayne's directorial abilities.

My personal feelings is that this film, whilst flawed, is a resounding technical achievement and hopefully Wayne, in later life was proud of his initiative in bringing the story to the screen, however liberally the truth has been massaged.

I think this I John Wayne's first credit as director. I am sure that many actors would hesitate before accepting a novice director in such an ambitious movie.

And a certain snobbery was involved. Heston didn't want to be directed by a "cowboy actor", and when THE ALAMO was shot in 1959, Heston was a liberal at that point.

Heston said one reasons was he had just gotten through with spending a Year on "Ben Hur" and was not in the mood for another really long shoot and he had some problems with the script.
I don't think politics had anything to do with it.
