To what extent do the producers remove/amend storylines or characters based on viewers reception of them?

Do they do test screenings with audiences? Do they just go on what journalists in gossip magazines say? Or do they literally just go off what they think works and doesn't work when they themselves watch back an episode?

I'd like to think that at least one writer frequents this board. I think viewer input should be noted in order that they can get the feedback they require. I know it's the longest-running soap in the UK but as writers come and go it isn't a sure fire guarantee unless they maintain the right balance.

I only watch Corrie and Emmerdale. I gave up Eastenders a decade ago because it was just so repetitively depressing and violent (needlessly so IMHO).

I remember a whole family being removed from Emmerdale (the family that were cast via a Soapstar reality show) because they weren't well received by the audience, but I don't know how that reception is determined. Maybe they get a ton of complaint letters from mad people with too much time on their hands? Or maybe they come here to look at our rants. I doubt the latter though, otherwise Sean and Izzy would be long gone!

I keep wondering about the story lines that just seem to vanish. Beffany's bullying, Billy's brother, Sergeant Troy from Midsomer who thought Liz was Amy's mum (his eyesight must have really gone down after leaving the Police), Mary's motorhome.

And another thing, why doesn't Mr Ecclestone drink in the Rovers or get his paper from the Kabin or eat at Roys or the Bistro

Bethany's bullying didn't disappear - it was resolved this week.

Mary's motorhome was impounded and she decided not to pay the release fee.

I think the storyline with Liz's admirer got forgotten about when Beverley Callard took extended sick leave. Shame - that one had legs, especially as it appeared that he was passing off his grandson as his son as well. By the way, it wasn't Seargent Troy - that was the football coach who fancied Leanne.

I complete online surveys via YouGov and amongst other things, I've been asked my opinions on various CS characters.

So you're suggesting what..?

reply

That YouGov, an independent surveying/polling company, is being routinely commissioned to test audience response to the programme and its characters.....
